About us

Journalists in Need Network (jinn) is a Berlin-based non-profit organization dedicated to supporting media workers facing risks and fostering cross-border cooperation. Established during the early stages of the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, our primary goals are to provide support for exiled media professionals in Germany and advance cross-border investigative journalism.

Our focus extends to educational, funding and mentorship programs designed to enhance the capacities of media outlets, freelance and independent journalists, especially from Belarus and Russia, who had been forced to leave their countries. We aim to help them explore and test new models, find funding opportunities, and develop new partnerships.

The jinn network comprises German and international media and NGOs, alongside state and private foundations, media and legal consultants and investigative researchers. In cooperation with Reporters without Borders, JX Fund, Thomson Reuters Foundation, Prague Civil Society Centre, Federal Foreign Office of Germany and Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media, we’ve been developing new infrastructures for exile media since 2022 and have provided a co-working space with a training centre and a studio for podcast and video recording at the Exile Media Hub in Berlin.

We are a part of the Collaborative and Investigative Journalism Initiative (CIJI), an EU-funded project aimed at enhancing collaborative and investigative journalism. As one of the three regional media hubs, our role is to act as a focal point for journalists, providing resources and support to enhance collaborative and investigative journalism efforts in our region. CIJI’s primary aim is to fortify the collaborative journalism ecosystem and enhance investigative reporting capacities across borders.

At present, the Nexus project is one of our key focus areas. Nexus is dedicated to investigating and countering the Kremlin’s malign influence, spanning economic coercion, disinformation, cyber-attacks, interference in elections, and support of proxy conflicts. In partnership with the International Republican Institute, the project offers training, mentorship, and financial support to media projects across Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the Western Balkans, focusing on awareness campaigns, investigative reporting, and media content production.

Our commitment lies in providing a support network for media professionals navigating challenges to press freedom, whether due to political persecution or censorship. By providing support for investigative reporting and independent journalism, we aim to foster democratic values and advocate for transparency and accountability.

Presently, jinn comprises 7 members from Germany and Russia. Our team members bring backgrounds in project management, media work, history, and business administration, ensuring a well-rounded approach to addressing the challenges at hand.
